Suki Waterhouse has revealed the backstage drama at Taylor Swift‘s Wembley show that nearly derailed her act. The new mum, 32, opened for the superstar at one of her London gigs this month but unbeknownst to the 90,000-strong crowd, chaos was happening behind the scenes due to an outfit issue
Speaking to The Times about the experience, Suki revealed she was set on having an outfit with ‘massive sleeves’ and enlisted French fashion house Chloé to make her a dress.
However, the dress wasn’t collected ahead of the show and on the day Suki was set to perform, Chloé was closed, resulting in drastic action being taken.
Suki recalled: ‘One of my managers gave a porter £500 to break in and grab the dress. I think there were literally 140 [phone] calls.’
Thankfully, the dress made its way to Suki less than two hours before she was due to perform, with Suki kept in the dark by her management until then ‘because I was already stressing’.
Suki also revealed that she had been asked to open for her friend last year, sharing: ‘Taylor did mention that at dinner a year ago. I didn’t know if it was real.
‘But that’s the thing about her: I should have known, she always plans. When she says something, she’s gonna do it.’
The look-a-like stars have been close friends since 2016 when they were pictured in matching outfits – and have even double dated with Suki’s fiancé Robert Pattinson and Taylor’s then-boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
After the show, Suki took to Instagram to share: ‘The last time I was at Wembley I was dancing my ass off at the Reputation tour! Never did I think the next time I’d be here would be opening for my favourite artist with my friends and family in the crowd’.
‘Thank you @taylorswift for this once in a lifetime opportunity to perform in my beloved London and for the unwavering support in my own journey as an artist. You are the world’s biggest and brightest star, I love you so much.
‘My nervous system will never be the same after last night. Someone go tell this girl on the last slide she just opened for ERAS BABY!!!’.
Opening for Taylor has geared up Suki for her own shows, and she is set to go on a 27-date North American tour next month.
This tour will be different than others, however, as she’s going on the road with the five-month-old daughter she shares with Robert, whose name they have not disclosed.
She mused: ‘I’m actually really excited about [taking her on the tour bus]. I know that sounds crazy. But I really am. I didn’t have a baby to be like: “Oh, I’ll just leave her at home for five weeks.” That’s not even an option. I’m absolutely obsessed with being with my baby, so I would never [leave her].’
Yet she’s under no illusion that it could be a struggle so Robert will pitch in if needed.
She explained: ‘If it gets crazy and I feel like the baby needs a break, then her dad will come and get her and she’ll go and hang out with him on set. You just make it work.’
